Summary

Asst. Prof. Dr. Waleed Al-Ashtari was born in 1979 at Baghdad, Iraq. He received his Bashelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Al-Nahrain University in 2000, Master’s degree in Applied Mechanics from Al-Nahrain University in 2003 and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the chair of Mechatronics and Dynamics at the University of Paderborn in 2013. From 2006 to present he joined the department of the Mechanical Engineering- College of Engineering- University of Bagdad and working as a faculty member there. He has more than 20 research publications to his credit and his research interests include vibration, control, and energy harvesting

Increasing the power of piezoelectric energy harvesters by magnetic stiffening

A piezoelectric cantilever beam with a tip mass at its free end is a common energy harvester configuration. This article introduces a new principle of designing such a harvester that increases the generated power without changing the resonance frequency of the harvester: the attraction force between two permanent magnets is used to add stiffness to the system. A Novel Analytical Model to Design Piezoelectric Patches Used to Repair Cracked Beams

In this paper, an analytical solution describing the deflection of a cracked beam repaired with piezoelectric patch is introduced. The solution is derived using perturbation method. A novel analytical model to calculate the proper dimensions of piezoelectric patches used to repair cracked beams is also introduced. This model shows that the thickness of the piezoelectric patch depends mainly on the thickness of the cracked beam, the electro-mechanical properties of the patch material, the applied load and the crack location. A NEW APPROACH FOR MODELLING THE VIBRATION OF BEAMS UNDER MOVING LOAD EFFECT

In this paper, a new equivalent lumped parameter model is proposed for describing the vibration of beams under the moving load effect. Also, an analytical formula for calculating such vibration for low-speed loads is presented. Furthermore, a MATLAB/Simulink model is introduced to give a simple and accurate solution that can be used to design beams subjected to any moving loads, i.e., loads of any magnitude and speed. In general, the proposed Simulink model can be used much easier than the alternative FEM software, which is usually used in designing such beams. Precisely, it investigates replacing the ordinary beam of a structure by two beams of half the thickness, which are joined by bolts.
