The Impact of Overweight Among Children on Salivary Vitamin D, Calcium, and Magnesium in Relation to Dental Caries Severity
...Show More Authors

Vitamin D is one of several nutrients essential for calcium metabolism. Body weight status and magnesium may influence vitamin D activity. To determine whether salivary vitamin D, magnesium, and calcium levels are associated with body weight status and dental caries severity in children, this cross‐sectional research was conducted.

Methods

The sample consisted of 180 boys aged 6–8 years. According to their body mass index (BMI), children were assigned to three groups of 60 boys (normal weight, overweight, and obese). Moreover, within each weight group, the sample was divided into three groups according to caries severity (20 children in each group): mild (dmft ≤ 3), moderate (dmft = 4–6), and severe (dmft ≥ 7). Unstimulated whole saliva was obtained from each child in the morning (9 : 00–11 : 00 a.m.) at least 1 h after food or drink intake. Participants were seated and asked to accumulate saliva in the floor of their mouth and then spit into sterile, prelabeled polypropylene tubes over a 5 min period; the samples were then analyzed to assess salivary vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium concentrations.

Results

Salivary vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium concentrations were significantly higher in boys with normal weight than in overweight and obese boys ( p ≤ 0.05), the same results were recorded in mild caries children compared to those with moderate and severe caries ( p ≤ 0.05). Interactions between BMI and caries severity in vitamin D, magnesium, and calcium were found that reached significant levels.

Conclusion

This study provides preliminary evidence of associations between salivary (vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium) levels and both dental caries and overweight in boys. Given the cross‐sectional design, limited sample size, and homogeneous population, the results should be interpreted with caution. Longitudinal studies are required to validate these biomarkers for routine clinical use.

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common GI disorders in people under 50 years of age.
Objective: To Formulate an overview about demographics of IBS and patterns of presentation, to determine IBS patients severity ranking, and to recognize the main regimens with their patient satisfaction.
Methods: This is a cross sectional clinical study that is conducted in Outpatient Consultant Internal Medicine Clinic in Al-Kindy Teaching Hospital from 11/12/2017 to 24/12/2017. The patients suffering from IBS are diagnosed by a consultant according to the symptom-based Rome criteria for functional GI disorders, by implementing a questionnaire collecting thorough information. 77 cases of IBS patients were collected (2

Background: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical
problem that is associated with an acute-phase reaction.
Previous studies have shown that cytokines and acutephase proteins are activated and may serve as indicators for
appendicitis.
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate of serum
levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in correlation to the severity
to acute appendicitis.
Methods: This is a prospective study from December 2008
to March 2009 of patients who had appendectomy in
Department of Surgery, Al-Kindy Teaching Hospital -
Baghdad/Iraq. Serum for estimating levels of interleukin-6

The study seeks the relationship between the mathematical-procedural Knowledge and the logical-mathematical intelligence among students at the third stage in mathematics department. To this end, three questions were arisen: what is the level of mathematical-procedural Knowledge among the third stage students in mathematics department regarding their gender? Do male or female students have more logical-mathematical intelligence and are there significant differences base on their gender? What kind of correlation is between the level of mathematical-procedural Knowledge and the logical-mathematical intelligence of male and female students in the third stage in the mathematics department? A sample of (75) male and female students at the thir

Obstetric and Neonatal Outcomes in Overweight Adolescent Pregnant Mothers
...Show More Authors

Background The escalating global concern over increased body weight in adolescents, coupled with the rising rates of adolescent pregnancy worldwide, presents a significant challenge to healthcare systems. We plan to identify the maternal and neonatal consequences associated with pre-pregnancy overweight in adolescent women. Methods Throughout five years, all singleton adolescent pregnant women with pre-pregnancy self-reported body mass index (BMI) of 18.5– ≤ 29.9 were involved during the first-trimester visit. Two groups were generated: overweight and appropriate-weight (BMI 25–29.9 and 18.5–24.9, respectively). Obstetric and neonatal outcomes were observed prospectively and statistically adjusted for the confounding factors.

Determination of the effect of stress on the salivary cortisol level among sample of university students having myofacial pain
...Show More Authors

Background: Psychological stress is considered the major etiological factor precipitating myofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders. It is known that stress induce various adaptational responses of physiologic systems. The process includes increase in the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis which promotes cortisol secretion. Salivary cortisol has been used as a measure of free circulating cortisol levels. The use of salivary biomarkers has gained increased popularity since collecting samples is non-invasive and painless. The aim of thisstudy was to evaluate the level of cortisol in saliva among sample of university students having myofacial pain, during the final exam period and whether this finding could have a significa

Background: Menopause can bring oral health problems and also associated with significant adverse changes in the orofacial complex. After menopause, women become more susceptible to periodontal disease due to deficiency of estrogen hormone. Current study aimed to evaluate the periodontal health status in relation to salivary constituent including pH, flow rate and some elements (Magnesium, Calcium and inorganic phosphorus) of pre and post-menopause women. Materials and Methods: Periodontal health status of 52 women aged 48-50 years old (26 pre-menopause and 26 post-menopause) were examined including (gingival index, plaque index, calculus index, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level). Salivary sample was collected for two women
