The role of strategic planning in addressing Iraqi youth migration
...Show More Authors
Purpose

This study examines the role of strategic planning in reducing youth migration in Iraq by promoting sustainable development. It highlights how comprehensive strategies can address economic, political, and environmental drivers of migration, offering practical alternatives for a stable future for Iraqi youth.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive–analytical qualitative approach was used, combining a literature review with a structured workshop of 100 political science students. Data from focused group discussions were thematically coded to explore youth perceptions of migration and the role of strategic planning.

Findings

Results indicate that economic diversification, green economy promotion, sustainable employment, education reform, and political stability can reduce migration. Coherent policies, cross-sector collaboration, and innovative models like Masdar City demonstrate sustainable development and technological innovation.

Research limitations/implications

This study has some limitations, including a small sample of 100 students from the College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad and reliance on qualitative data, which may be subject to bias. Nevertheless, the findings provide useful insights into the drivers of youth migration in Iraq and offer practical guidance for policymakers and institutions. Future research could include larger samples and additional regions to strengthen the results.

Practical implications

The finding of this study have several practical implications for addressing youth migration in Iraq. First, the fragile security condition and ongoing conflicts indicate the need for targeted programs that ensure the safety and engagement of young people in affected regions. Second, the high rates of unemployment and limited economic opportunities highlight the importance of developing sustainable employment initiatives, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, smart agriculture and green technologies, to retain young talent. Third, environmental challenges, including climate change and resource scarcity, call for programs that support climate-resilient livelihoods for youth. Fourth, weak governmental policies and the absence of a comprehensive legal framework for migration suggest the necessity of implementing clear, actionable policies that connect migration management with social and economic development objectives. Finally, the ongoing brain drain emphasizes the importance of strengthening educational and vocational training programs, improving public services and promoting good governance to enhance institutional trust and reduce incentives for migration. These measures collectively provide actionable guidance for policymakers and institutions seeking to retain youth, reduce brain drain and promote sustainable development in Iraq.

Originality/value

The study addresses a contemporary issue by applying Bryson's strategic planning model as an analytical framework to mitigate Iraqi youth migration, integrating the Sustainable Development Goals and green economy initiatives. This innovative approach provides a novel, policy-oriented perspective and actionable insights for policymakers seeking sustainable and effective solutions.

Synthesis, Spectral Characterization, DNA Cleavage, and Antioxidant Properties of Metal Complexes with a Novel Schiff Base Ligand Derived from 4-Chlorobenzoic Acid
...Show More Authors

A novel Schiff base ligand (DBC) synthesized from 4-chlorobenzoic acid, along with its Cu (II) and Co (II) complexes, was prepared and characterized using FT-IR, 1H and 13C-NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, as well as magnetic and conductivity measurements. Based on this, a tetrahedral structure of [M(DBC)Cl2] was proposed for the complexes. Antioxidant activity of the compounds was assessed and compared to ascorbic acid, revealing that the copper complex exhibited superior antioxidant properties compared to the cobalt complex and the ligand. Furthermore, the antibiofilm potential of the copper and cobalt complexes was assessed against five clinically relevant bacterial species (P.aeruginosa, E.coli, K.pneumoniae, S.aureus and S.typhi) usin

Synthesis and Characterization of Calcium Oxide Impregnated on Silica from Duck Egg Shells and Rice Husks as Heterogeneous Catalysts for Biodiesel Synthesis
...Show More Authors

Biodiesel can be prepared from various types of vegetable oils or animal fats with the aid of a catalyst.
Calcium oxide (CaO) is one of the prospective heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel synthesis. Modification
of CaO by impregnation on silica (SiO2) can improve the performance of CaO as catalyst. Egg shells and rice
husks as biomass waste can be used as raw materials for the preparation of the silica modified CaO catalyst.
The present study was directed to synthesize and characterize CaO impregnated SiO2 catalyst from biomass
waste and apply it as catalyst in biodiesel synthesis. The catalyst was synthesized by wet impregnation
method and characterized by x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, nitr

Synthesis, spectroscopic and single-crystal analysis, and DFT studies of N₂O₂ diamine coordination complexes: solvent-driven geometry switching and NLO properties
...Show More Authors

The design of coordination compounds with solvent-responsive optical properties remains a central challenge in molecular photonics. Here, we describe the synthesis and full characterisation of a symmetrical tetradentate diamine ligand, 3,3′-((1,2-phenylenebis(azanediyl))- bis(methanylylidene))bis(pentane-2,4-dione) (H₂L), and its neutral square-planar complexes [M(L)] (M(II) = Co, Ni, Cu). The Cu(II) complex crystallised as [Cu(L)]⋅0.5 (pyrazine), adopting a nearly square-planar geometry (τ₄ = 0.06) in the solid state, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In DMSO solution, UV–Vis spectra revealed reversible axial coordination of two solvent molecules, driving a transformation to a distorted octahedral geometry. Struc

Transition metal complexes of Y(III), La(III) and Rh(III) with azo dye 2,4-dimethyl-6- (4-nitro-phenylazo)-phenol derived from 4-nitroaniline and 2,4-dimethylphenol were synthesized. Characterization of these compounds has been done on the basis of elemental analysis, electronic data, FT-IR,UV-Vis and 1HNMR, as well as conductivity measurements. The nature of the complexes formed were studies following the mole ratio and continuous variation methods, Beer's law obeyed over a concentration range (1x10-4- 3x10-4). High molar absorbtivity of the complex solutions were observed. From the analytical data, the stoichiomerty of the complexes has been found to be 1:3 (Metal:ligand). On the basis of Physicochemical data octahedral geometries were as

The preparation and characterization of innovative nanocomposites based on zinc oxide nanorods (ZNR) encapsulated by graphene (Gr) nanosheets and decorated with silver (Ag), and cupper (Cu) nanoparticles (NP) were studied. The prepared nanocomposites (ZNR@Gr/Cu-Ag) were examined by different techniques including Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed that the ZNR has been good cover by five layers of graphene and decorated with Ag and Cu NPs with particles size of about 10-15 nm. The ZNR@Gr/Cu-Ag nanocomposites exhibit high absorption behavior in ultraviolet (UV) region of sp
