They are divided into two groups: acetylcholinesterase (AChE) involved in the hydrolysis of the neurotransimitter acetylcholine, and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) of unknown function. Human BChE has attracted attention because it can hydrolyze toxic esters and nerve agents.
