Comparative Study between RIPASA Scoring System and ALVARADO Scoring System in Diagnosing Acute Appendicitis in Adults
...Show More Authors

Background: Acute appendicitis is regarded as one of the most common inflammation that needs surgical intervention. Different scoring systems have been used for diagnosing of acute appendicitis. ALVARADO score is one of the most widely used score in diagnosing of acute appendicitis, but the accuracy of the latter is insufficiently low in Middle-East patients. Thus a new scoring system called RIPASA score has been designed for diagnosing of acute appendicitis in those patients. The aim of this study is to use RIPASA score and compare its result with ALVARADO score in diagnosing of acute appendicitis.

Subjects and Methods: The study includes 200 patients with symptoms and signs of acute appendicitis in Al-Kindy Teaching Hospital/Baghdad/Iraq from 1st of November 2017 to 30th of November 2018. The variables of both scoring systems are registered for each patient included in this study and all patients who are underwent appendectomy their specimens are sent for histopathology.

Results: The study includes 200 patients with suspicion of acute appendicitis. By applying both scores for each patient, then comparing the result of the two scores  with the histopathology reports; RIPASA score has shown sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy (93.6%, 74.4%, 89.5%) more than ALVARADO score (82.8%, 65.1%, 79%) respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of RIPASA score (0.957) is higher and significantly better than that of ALVARADO score (0.893) with P value <0.05.

Conclusions: The RIPASA score is more sensitive, more specific, and has high diagnostic accuracy than ALVARADO score.

...Show More Authors

Glycyrrhiza glabra is a herbal plant used for treatment of many infertility diseases. Its roots, a common herbal source, are described to soothe fetuses in pregnant mice, but there isn't enough research to know if it's safe to take during pregnancy and its effects on implantation factors. This study examines the impact of the growth factors betacellulin (BTC), heparin-binding epidermal growth factor, and activin A hormone on embryonic development after oral administration of Glycyrrhiza glabra aqueous extract to mice. In line with clinical use, an aqueous extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra roots was prepared. Pregnant mice were randomly assigned to one of four groups: Two mice groups 8 and 28 weeks old treated with water as a negative co

An Image Processing Algorithm to Address the Problem of Stains Merge on Water Sensitive Papers and Its Impact on the Evaluation of Spray Quality Indicators
...Show More Authors

There are many techniques that can be used to estimate the spray quality traits such as the spray coverage, droplet density, droplet count, and droplet diameter. One of the most common techniques is to use water sensitive papers (WSP) as a spray collector on field conditions and analyzing them using several software. However, possible merger of some droplets could occur after they deposit on WSP, and this could affect the accuracy of the results. In this research, image processing technique was used for better estimation of the spray traits, and to overcome the problem of droplet merger. The droplets were classified as non-merged and merged droplets based on their roundness, then the merged droplets were separated based on the average non-m

Green Tea–Driven Green Synthesis of a Curcumin@Platinum Nanohybrid with Multifunctional Antioxidant, Burn-Healing Agent, and Selective Anticancer against PANC-1 Pancreatic Cancer Cells
...Show More Authors

This study aimed to fabricate a curcumin@platinum nanohybrid (CUR@Pt NPs) through a green tea–based synthesis method and to evaluate its various functions, including antioxidant, burn-healing, and selective anticancer activities against PANC-1 pancreatic cancer cells. Green tea polyphenols served as natural reducing and stabilizing agents, facilitating an eco-friendly, single-step manufacturing process. Physicochemical characterization confirmed successful nanohybrid formation: a CUR@Pt band appeared at 457 nm in the UV–Vis spectrum, XRD displayed crystalline platinum peaks at 2θ = 46.9°, and 67.0°, matching the (200), and (220) planes, respectively, and TEM images showed well-dispersed spherical nanoparticles with an average siz
