Clinical and Salivary Antioxidant Effects of Matcha Tea in Patients with Gingivitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial
...Show More Authors
Introduction

Gingivitis, the initial stage of periodontal disease, is characterised by inflammation driven by dental biofilm and associated with oxidative stress. Matcha tea, a powdered green tea rich in antioxidants, has shown potential health benefits. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Matcha tea consumption on clinical periodontal parameters and salivary antioxidant levels in patients with gingivitis.

Methods

A randomised controlled clinical trial was conducted with 41 participants diagnosed with gingivitis. Participants were randomly allocated to a Matcha tea group (n=21) who consumed two cups of Matcha tea daily for 30 days, or a control group (n=20) who received standard oral hygiene instructions. Primary outcomes were clinical periodontal parameters (Plaque Index [PI], Bleeding on Probing percentage [BOP%], Gingival Index [GI]), and secondary outcomes were salivary levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), and Glutathione Peroxidase 1 (GPX1), assessed at baseline and after 30 days.

Results

Both groups showed significant within-group improvements in PI, BOP%, and GI at the 30-day follow-up (p<0.01). However, there were no statistically significant differences in these clinical parameters between the Matcha tea and control groups at the endpoint. The Matcha tea group exhibited a significant reduction in salivary MDA levels (p=0.002) and significantly higher salivary SOD (p=0.047) and GPX1 (p=0.027) levels compared to the control group at the 30-day follow-up.

Discussion

The biochemical improvements are attributed to Matcha's potent antioxidants, which favorably modulate the oral redox balance. The lack of superior clinical outcomes suggests that the profound effect of mechanical plaque control may have overshadowed any adjunctive benefits from Matcha within the 30-day trial. This highlights a potential disconnect between systemic antioxidant modulation and localised clinical changes in gingivitis management.

Conclusion

Daily consumption of Matcha tea for one month favorably modulated salivary antioxidant biomarkers in patients with gingivitis, reducing lipid peroxidation and increasing antioxidant enzyme levels. However, these biochemical changes did not translate into statistically significant differences in clinical periodontal parameters beyond standard oral hygiene within this study's timeframe.

Comparative Study of Thymidine Kinase -1 and Total Antioxidant Capacity in Iraqi Children with Platelet Count Disorder
...Show More Authors

This study aimed to find relationship between thymidine kinase-1 (TK-1) as tumor marker and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in Iraqi children patients with thrombocytopenia and with thrombocytosis. The present study conducted 60 children patients (30 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) and 30 patients with thrombocytosis caused by leukemia) attending the Children Fever Hospital in the Medical City / Baghdad, and 30 healthy children as a control group. All study groups were with range ages (1-15) years, and they were diagnosed by assay of platelet count, Prothrombin Time (PT), and partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT). The results shown elevation in plasma TK-1 and TAC values in children patients with thrombocytopenia and w

Background: Multifactor affect the pathogenesis of thrombosis in solid malignancy; however, a significant role is attributed to the cancer cells ability to interact with and activate the host hemostatic system. [1]

Hemostasis is highly correlated to tumor growth, angiogenesis and metastasis, modulation of these pathways reflects interesting and promising treatment options in the future. [1]

Most patients with cancer frequently suffer from chronic compensated DIC and have abnormal laboratory coagulation tests without clinical manifestations of thrombosis, which is a subclinical hypercoagulable state that can be detected by varying degrees of activation of blood clotting. The results of laboratory tests in th

Analytical Potentiality of Computer - Controlled Background Correction with Electrothermal Atomic Emission Spectrometry : Determination of Copper in Milk Powder
...Show More Authors

A fully automatic electrothermal atomic emission spectrometry (ETA-AES) is described. This system is based on an echelle monochromator modified for wave¬length modulation which is completely controlled by microcomputer . The advantages of the system in atomic spectrometry have been discussed . Aspects of the analytical performances such as calibration ? dection limit, precision , and recovery for copper are considered . This system is applied for routine determination of copper in commercial powdered mill? by slurr>' atomization versus aqueous atomization techniques.

Periodontal health status and salivary parameters in pregnancy

Background: Pregnancy is considered a major risk factor for development and progression of periodontal disease. There are hormonal changes in both estrogen and progesterone hormones in addition to bacterial effect and poor oral hygiene that will enhance development of periodontal disease in pregnant women. Materials and methods: Seventy subjects were enrolled in the study, the subjects with an age range (20-35) years old without any history of systemic disease. The subjects were divided into 20 non-pregnant women they represent the control group (G I), 30 pregnant women with gingivitis (GII) and 20 pregnant women with periodontitis (GIII).All periodontal parameters (plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth an

Correlation of Vitamin D Level with Electrophysiological Findings and Clinical Grading in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
...Show More Authors

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a neurological disease that presented with paresthesias, pain, and numbness in the hand's median nerve compression. Vitamin D was assumed to affect both electrophysiological &clinical gradings, the study aims to assess the correlation between the deficiency of vitamin D and both electrophysiological and clinical gradings. This study was conducted in Ghazi Alhariri Hospital during the period from the first of November/2020 to the twenty-eighth of February/2021, fifty five individuals were referred to as Carpal tunnel syndrome patients, and compared to (55) control individuals, blood samples were withdrawn from the patients (3ml), centrifuged and kept in the freezer (-20°C) until the time of analysis of

Hyperferritinemia as a factor associated with poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients
...Show More Authors

Worldwide, hundreds of millions of people have been infected with COVID-19 since December 2019; however, about 20% or less developed severe symptoms. The main aim of the current study was to  assess  the  relationship  between  the  severity of Covid-19 and different clinical and laboratory parameters. A total number of 466 Arabs have willingly joined this prospective cohort. Out of the total number, 297 subjects (63.7%) had negative COVID-19 tests, and thus, they were recruited as controls, while 169 subjects (36.3%) who tested positive for COVID-19 were enrolled as cases. Out of the total number of COVID-19 patients, 127 (75.15%) presented with mild symptoms, and 42 (24.85%) had severe symptoms. The age range for the partic

The present study was set to demonstrate the prevalence of toxoplasmosis infection and its effects on patients with systemic  lupus erythematosus (SLE) through determining their serum levels of anti-dsDNA and IL-18 antibodies. For this purpose, the sera from 132 SLE and/or toxoplasmosis patients and 30 healthy women, were collected. The study sample was divided into four groups of SLE, toxoplasmosis, SLE coinfected with toxoplasmosis, and healthy control. Anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibodies were examined for all the samples using ELISA kit. The results showed a high mean level of anti-Toxoplasma IgG among SLE patients coinfected with toxoplasmosis (104.8792±12.31585pg/ml) in comparison to that in toxoplasmosis patients (91.1705±12.577
