Modeling Rate of Penetration using Artificial Intelligent System and Multiple Regression Analysis
...Show More Authors
Abstract
Over the years, the prediction of penetration rate (ROP) has played a key rule for drilling engineers due it is effect on the optimization of various parameters that related to substantial cost saving. Many researchers have continually worked to optimize penetration rate. A major issue with most published studies is that there is no simple model currently available to guarantee the ROP prediction.

The main objective of this study is to further improve ROP prediction using two predictive methods, multiple regression analysis (MRA) and artificial neural networks (ANNs). A field case in SE Iraq was conducted to predict the ROP from a large number of parameters. A databases from one well drilled in carbonate environments were subjected to the predictive methods. Each raw dataset is described by eight parameters including rate of penetration (ROP), true vertical depth (TVD), weight on bit (WOB), bit rotational speed (RPM), torque (TQ), flow rate (Q), equivalent circulating density (ECD), standpipe pressure (SPP), and unconfined compressive strength (UCS). First, both MRA and ANNs are tested as predictive methods. The prediction capacity of each model was also verified by using two-based error metrics: the determination coefficient (R2) and the mean square error (MSE).

The current results support the evidence that MRA and ANNs are able to be effectively utilize the drilling data, and thus provide accurate ROP prediction. However, more attention to the multiple regression analysis is required where it is implemented for ROP prediction. ANNs appear to be more conservative in predicting ROP than MRA as indicated by a higher value R2 (0.96) and lower value MSE (1.89) of the ANN model. Considering the input parameters, the obtained results showed that TVD, WOB, RPM, SPP, and ECD had the greatest effect on estimated ROP-conditions, followed in decreasing by pump flow rate, drilling torque, and rock strength. Another important point that highlights in this study is that the drilling rate may increase with depth in carbonate rocks because of their heterogeneity. This study presents new models to estimate ROP from other parameters which can help the driller to achieve an optimal drilling rate through monitoring controllable parameters.

Evaluation of ANFIS and Regression Techniques in Estimating Soil Compression Index for Cohesive soils
...Show More Authors

Generally, direct measurement of soil compression index (Cc) is expensive and time-consuming. To save time and effort, indirect methods to obtain Cc may be an inexpensive option. Usually, the indirect methods are based on a correlation between some easier measuring descriptive variables such as liquid limit, soil density, and natural water content. This study used the ANFIS and regression methods to obtain Cc indirectly. To achieve the aim of this investigation, 177 undisturbed samples were collected from the cohesive soil in Sulaymaniyah Governorate in Iraq. Results of this study indicated that ANFIS models over-performed the Regression method in estimating Cc with R2 of 0.66 and 0.48 for both ANFIS and Regre

Intelligent Robotic Welding Based on a Computer Vision Technology Approach
...Show More Authors

Robots have become an essential part of modern industries in welding departments to increase the accuracy and rate of production. The intelligent detection of welding line edges to start the weld in a proper position is very important. This work introduces a new approach using image processing to detect welding lines by tracking the edges of plates according to the required speed by three degrees of a freedom robotic arm. The two different algorithms achieved in the developed approach are the edge detection and top-hat transformation. An adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system ANFIS was used to choose the best forward and inverse kinematics of the robot. MIG welding at the end-effector was applied as a tool in this system, and the wel

Smart element aware gate controller for intelligent wheeled robot navigation
...Show More Authors

The directing of a wheeled robot in an unknown moving environment with physical barriers is a difficult proposition. In particular, having an optimal or near-optimal path that avoids obstacles is a major challenge. In this paper, a modified neuro-controller mechanism is proposed for controlling the movement of an indoor mobile robot. The proposed mechanism is based on the design of a modified Elman neural network (MENN) with an effective element aware gate (MEEG) as the neuro-controller. This controller is updated to overcome the rigid and dynamic barriers in the indoor area. The proposed controller is implemented with a mobile robot known as Khepera IV in a practical manner. The practical results demonstrate that the propo

EFFECTIVE USE OF FERTILIZERS AND ANALYSIS OF SOIL USING PRECISION AGRICULTURE TECHNIQUES
...Show More Authors

Soil fertility is a crucial factor in measuring soil quality, it indicates the extent to which soil can support plant life. Soil fertility is measured by the amount of macro and micronutrients, pH, etc. Soil nutrients are depleted after each harvest and therefore must be added. To maintain soil nutrient levels, fertilizer is added to the soil. Adding fertilizer in the precise amount is a matter of great importance because excess or insufficient application can harm plant life and reduce productivity. The use of modern technology is a solution to this problem. Although automated techniques for sowing, weeding, crop harvesting, etc. have been proposed and implemented, none of the techniques are aimed to maintaining soil fertility. The study a

CONSTRUCTION DELAY ANALYSIS USING DAILY WINDOWS TECHNIQUE
...Show More Authors

Delays occur commonly in construction projects. Assessing the impact of delay is sometimes a contentious
issue. Several delay analysis methods are available but no one method can be universally used over another in
all situations. The selection of the proper analysis method depends upon a variety of factors including
information available, time of analysis, capabilities of the methodology, and time, funds and effort allocated to the analysis. This paper presents computerized schedule analysis programmed that use daily windows analysis method as it recognized one of the most credible methods, and it is one of the few techniques much more likely to be accepted by courts than any other method. A simple case study has been implement

Studying the Effect of Permeability Prediction on Reservoir History Matching by Using Artificial Intelligence and Flow Zone Indicator Methods
...Show More Authors

The map of permeability distribution in the reservoirs is considered one of the most essential steps of the geologic model building due to its governing the fluid flow through the reservoir which makes it the most influential parameter on the history matching than other parameters. For that, it is the most petrophysical properties that are tuned during the history matching. Unfortunately, the prediction of the relationship between static petrophysics (porosity) and dynamic petrophysics (permeability) from conventional wells logs has a sophisticated problem to solve by conventional statistical methods for heterogeneous formations. For that, this paper examines the ability and performance of the artificial intelligence method in perme

Comparing Nozzles with Different Wear Rate and Working with the Same Application Rate of Different Plant Protection Products in Aspect of Plants Condition
...Show More Authors
Abstract
Three different types of nozzles (different wear rate) were used in this study. They are classified depending on the severity of their wear to three groups: new, worn and damaged nozzles. Those nozzles were spraying with the same application rate (303 l/ha) on two-year field trials; this was achieved by changing the spraying pressure for each group of nozzles in order to get the same application rate. This practice is usually done by operators of sprayers, who calibrate the sprayers on the same application rate every year without changing the nozzles, so they tend to reduce the spraying pressure in order to compensate the flow rate increase due to the nozzles yearly wear. Two types of
... Show More

Clouds Height Classification Using Texture Analysis of Meteosat Images
...Show More Authors

In the present work, pattern recognition is carried out by the contrast and relative variance of clouds. The K-mean clustering process is then applied to classify the cloud type; also, texture analysis being adopted to extract the textural features and using them in cloud classification process. The test image used in the classification process is the Meteosat-7 image for the D3 region. The K-mean method is adopted as an unsupervised classification. This method depends on the initial chosen seeds of cluster. Since, the initial seeds are chosen randomly, the user supply a set of means, or cluster centers in the n-dimensional space. The K-mean cluster has been applied on two bands (IR2 band) and (water vapour band). The textural analysis is used
