Any natural language is a multilevel system in which all elements are interrelated and mutually conditioned. The stability of this system ensures intergenerational communication among people speaking the language. However, the language, like a living organism, is in constant development, one of the consequences of which is the replenishment of the vocabulary of the language with new words - borrowed from other languages or formed according to the derivational models existing in a given language. In this paper, a contrastive analysis of the Arabic and Russian languages is made. Since affixal, in particular prefixal word formation, is characteristic of both languages under consideration, we had enough grounds for a comparative study. Contrastive or comparative linguistics is one of the young branches of modern linguistics, its methods and techniques allow us to single out the common things that unite different languages and to emphasize the peculiarities peculiar to a particular language. Comparative studies are of great applied importance, they make a significant contribution to the methodology of teaching foreign languages, as well as to the theory and practice of translation studies. This study compares the word-formation systems of two diverse and differently structured languages - Russian and Arabic. Affixation is the dominant way of forming new words in both languages. In the course of the study we analyzed the ways of word formation in the two languages being compared and identified standard models of prefixal derivations. The methods of structural analysis, semantic analysis, descriptive and comparative methods were used in the work.
