Role of Inhibin B and Ratio of Luteinizing: Follicle-Stimulating Hormones in Phenotyping Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
...Show More Authors

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome is among the leading causes of fertility-related problems and menstrual irregularities in women of reproductive age. The granulosa cells of the developing pre-antral and antral follicles produce inhibin B, which triggers chemical responses in the ovaries. Inhibin B is most often observed in the follicular phase when levels peak early and then decline over time Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the role of serum inhibin B and the Luteinizing Hormone / Follicle Stimulating Hormone ratio in differentiation between the different phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome as well as to define the predominant PCOS phenotype.  Methods: This cross-sectional research was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, College of Medicine, University of Baghdad from November 2023 to March 2024. The study included 111 women, ranging in age from 18-40 years. Among these, 91 women were diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) based on the 2003 Criteria for the Rotterdam Consensus, and the other 20 were healthy women.  Investigations included serum levels of inhibin B using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay technique, follicle Stimulating Hormone, luteinizing Hormone and prolactin using Tosoh AIA-2000 Automated Immunoassay, to calculate the LH/FSH ratio. Results: phenotype A was observed to be the predominant PCOS phenotype, while phenotype B was the rare form. The mean ±SEM values of the inhibin B levels for the phenotypes B (26.07±0.23 pg/ml, p=<0.001), C (25.96±1.68 pg/ml, p=<0.0001), and D (37.51±2.31 pg/ml, p=<0.0001), respectively, were significantly lower than those of the control women (57.68±2.07 pg/ml). However, the mean ±SEM value of inhibin B of phenotype A (50.46±7.12 pg/ml) was comparable to that of controls. The mean value of the LH levels of phenotype A (7.12±0.76 µIU/ml) showed significantly higher numbers than those of the control women (4.59±0.38 µIU/ml, p=0.03). Furthermore, the mean values of the LH/FSH ratio were significantly elevated in phenotypes A (p=0.001) and B (p=0.04) as compared to the controls.  Conclusion: Serum Inhibin B level and LH/FSH ratio can be used to distinguish between the different phenotypes of PCOS.

Sequencing of Catalytic Serine Protease, Linker, and Activation Peptide Domains-Coding Regions of the F9 Gene in Iraqi Hemophilia B Patients
...Show More Authors

Background: Hemophilia B is an X-linked recessive disorder caused by mutations in the F9 gene, causing bleeding tendency predominantly in males. The mutational spectrum of the F9 gene has not been adequately studied in Iraq. Objectives: To detect the disease-causing variants of exons 6, 7, and 8 and immediate introns of F9 gene using Sanger sequencing among Iraqi hemophilia B patients and to correlate them with phenotypes. Methods: Forty Iraqi hemophilia B patients were recruited for this cross-sectional study from The Hereditary Bleeding Disorder Ward in the Children Welfare Teaching Hospital, Medical City, Baghdad, between November 2021 and April 2022 using a consecutive sampling technique. Peripheral blood samples were used for sequencin

Hepatitis B Virus Molecular Characterization and Prevalent Genotypes in Iraq and Some Middle Eastern Countries
...Show More Authors

Hepatitis B virus occurs among the ubiquitous viral pathogens that pose a serious threat to the lives of millions around the globe. As a consequence of lacking proofreading during the replication cycle directed by the reverse transcriptase, HBV became distinguished by a considerable genetic variation. To date, ten different genotypes of this virus have been recognized through our world. Each of these genotypes was linked to various rates of severity and disease outcomes, ranging from cirrhosis to liver carcinoma, and to response to antivirals as well. Therefore, genotypic studies and molecular characterization of the virus may offer unparalleled assistance to predict the most successful treatment approaches. Moreover, this review attempts t

Isolation and purlfkation of B-lactemase from proteus mairbilis local isolates 4TF and 20TF
...Show More Authors

Proteus mirabilis ? -lactamase of local isolates number 4TF represent karkh side and 20TF represent rusafa side of Baghdad were extracted and purified 23.17, 25.23 fold with yield of 36.66 %, 37.5% and specific activity 11.8, 12.6 of unit/ mg protein by DEAE –cellulose and Sepharose 4B (respectively ).Molecular weight of both enzyme was about 35500 Dalton determined by gel filtration. The study indicated that the isoelectric point of purified ? -lactamase that extracted from isolate number 4TF and 20TF was 5.4.

Leigh Syndrome: Report of a Rare Case with Late Onset Presentation
...Show More Authors

Leigh's syndrome, or sub acute necrotizing encephalomyelopathy, is a rare inherited neurometabolic disease of infancy and early childhood with variable course and prognosis. Rarely, it occurs in juveniles and adults. The diagnosis is difficult and still remains to challenge the clinicians on the basis of history; hence the role of imaging is very essential. It is the neuroimaging, chiefly the Magnetic Resonance Imaging showing characteristic symmetrical necrotic lesions in the basal ganglia and/or brain stem that leads to the diagnosis. Late-onset varieties are rare and only few cases were reported all over the world. Here, I report a case of late onset (juvenile) Leigh syndrome presenting with an acute polyneuropathy. Neuroimaging confi

Effect of Testosterone Enanthate Modeling of Polycystic Ovary on Liver Irs-2 mRNA Expression in Rats: A Brief Report
...Show More Authors

There are many animal models for polycystic ovary (PCO); using exogenous testosterone enanthate is one of the methods of induction of these models. However, induction of insulin resistance should also be studied in the modeling technics. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the expression of insulin receptor substrate (Irs)-2 mRNA in the liver tissue of rat PCO model. Nineteen Wistar rats were divided into three groups; (1) PCO modeling group (N =7) received daily 1.0 mg/100g testosterone enanthate solved in olive oil along with free access dextrose water 5%, (2) vehicle group (N =6), which handled like the PCO group, but did not receive testosterone enanthate, (3) control group (N =6) with standard care. The aim of this study was to evaluate in-vitro activity of Cefamandol and Ceftazidime, in combination with potassium clavulanate against 10 uropathogenic E.coli isolated from patients with chronic complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), these isolates were identified by the Api identification systems. The antimicrobial susceptibility tests were determined by Kirby-Bauer method and the minimum inhibitory concentrations of Cefamandol and Ceftazidime, were determined, by tube method. These isolates were resistant to Ampicillin (Amp), Amoxicillin (Amo), Carbenicillin (Cb), Ticarcillin (Tic), Amoxicillin\ Potassium Clavulanate {Augmentin}, (Amo\CA), Ticarcillin\ Potassium Clavulanate {Timentin} (Tic\CA), Cefamandol (Cfm) and Ceftazidime (
