ونخلص إلى ما ذهب إليه العوتبي في كتابه الإبانة في اللغة، فيما يخص عيوب النطق أو أمراض الكلام، إنه أورد جملة من المصطلحات الدالة على عيوب الكلام الصوتية والنطقية كالحبسة، والعقلة، والعي، والحصر، والرمز، والفدم، واللغوب، وأشار إلى توقف الصوت نتيجة حادثة أو مشكلة أو امتناع العضو الناطق عن إرادة الكلام، مما يشير إلى امتناع الصوت لعيب عضوي. كما ميز العوتبي اضطرابات الصوت الفردية الناجمة عن علة العي والعجز لدى الفرد كالعقلة والعقدة والحبسة-مما يعيق التواصل فضلا عن عوامل أخرى كاضطراب الصوت المنتج وعدم إبلاغه المراد إلى المستقبل نحو الجمجمة والوشوشة، ويمكن القول إنه أشار إلى عيوب الطلاقة نحو: الرتة، والتمتمة، والتأتأة، والفأفأة، واللفف، والترطيم، والتلعثم، واللجلجة. وحرص العوتبي على إيراد الفويرقات بين العيوب النطقية والصوتية، فميز. بين (الغنة) و(الخنة) فجعل الأخيرة أشد من الأولى مما يشوب الصوت في الخيشوم. وأورد جملة من المصطلحات الدالة على ما يعتري الكلام من معوقات، ناجمة عن أثر اللغة الأجنبية في نطق العربية كالطمطمة، واللكنة، والرطانة، والعجمة، وتعرف هذه المجموعة من المصطلحات في الدراسات الحديثة بمصطلح (تعدد اللغة).
