STUDY OF THE GENETIC DIVERSITY OF SOME GENOTYPES OF MAIZE UNDER TWO LEVELS OF NITROGEN FERTILIZATION
...Show More Authors

The present study aimed to determine the genetic divergence of seven maize genotypes (Al-Maha, Sumer, Al-Fajr, Baghdad, 5018, 4 × 1 single hybrid, and 4 × 2 single hybrid) under two varied levels of nitrogen fertilization (92 and 276 kg N ha-1). The experiment occurred in 2022 in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with a split-plot arrangement and three replications at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad, Iraq. The nitrogen fertilization levels served as main plots, with the maize genotypes allocated as the subplots. The results revealed that genetic variance was higher than the environmental variance for most traits, and the coefficient of phenotypic variation was close to the genetic variation coefficient under the two levels of nitrogen fertilization. Heritability (broad sense) at the 92 kg N ha-1 (N1 level) was the highest for traits. i.e., ear height, grains per row, grains per ear, individual plant yield, yield per unit area, days to 50% male flowering, leaf area, ear length, rows per ear, and 100-grain weight, with values of 92.556%, 90.760%, 90.123%, 95.007%, 95.007%, 88.976%, 89.974%, 88.748%, 85.521%, and 89.690%, respectively. For the N level of 276 kg ha-1 (N2 level), the heritability in a broad sense was high for the traits, viz., days to 50% male flowering (91.546%), plant height (96.150%), ear height (91.038%), ear length (92.454%), individual plant yield (98.108%), yield in the unit area (98.108%), and plant dry weight (85.488%). The cluster analysis divided the maize genotypes into four and five cluster groups under the nitrogen fertilization level of 92 and 276 kg N ha-1, respectively. These different groups of maize genotypes could be due to the genetic divergence among the genotypes resulting from their varied genetic makeup and origin.

Effect of Stimulating Maize Seeds with Potassium Nitrate and Licorice Extract on the Seed Viability and Vigor
...Show More Authors

Germination and field emergence are delayed and their duration is prolonged due to the declining soil temperature during the spring season, which is reflected in the subsequent stages of crop growth, therefore, this study aimed to improve germination. Under a wide range of environmental conditions, a laboratory factorial experiment was carried out to study the effect of seed stimulation with potassium nitrate (distilled water only (0), 2, 4, and 6 mg L-1) and with an aqueous extract of licorice roots (distilled water only (0), 3, 6, and 9 g L-1) on the seed viability and vigor. The laboratory experiment was carried out according to the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four repetitions. The results showed the superiority of the intera

Experimental and numerical study of the bulb's location effect on the behavior of under-reamed pile in expansive soil
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>In this experimental and numerical analysis, three varieties of under-reamed piles comprising one bulb were used. The location of the bulb changes from pile to pile, as it is found at the bottom, center, and top of the pile, respectively. PLAXES 3D was used to conduct the research. In expansive soil, the under-reamed piles were 350 mm long, with the pile tip in dense sandy soil. The experiment was carried out in both saturated and unsaturated circumstances. The influence of the bulb location on the pile's bearing capacity for vertical and lateral loads, as well as the amount of swelling pressure and upward movement owing to swelling, was investigated. Numerical Study of Specially Shaped Slender RC Columns under Compressive Load
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>In most Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings, the cross-section size of rectangular columns that conventionally used in these structures is larger than the thickness of their partitions. Consequently, a part of the column is protruded out of the wall which has some architectural disadvantages. Reducing the column size by using high strength concrete will result in slender column, thus the stability problem may be occurred. The stability problem is difficult to be overcome with rectangular columns. This paper study the effectiveness of using new types of columns called Specially Shaped Reinforced Concrete (SSRC) columns. Besides, the use of SSRC columns provides many structural advantage</p> ... Show More
