Middle Eastern Culture in Tasting the Sky: A Palestinian Childhood: A Cognitive Corpus Stylistic Study
...Show More Authors

Background: Understanding Middle Eastern Culture in literature is essential for engaging readers worldwide. A society's culture can be reflected through literature. To this end, this study aims to identify the stylistic patterns that reflect Middle Eastern culture in the selected data and to examine how the multilevel approach of this study helps to locate these patterns. Ibtisam Barakat’s Tasting the Sky: A Palestinian Childhood (2007) memoir is selected as the data of the study. Methodology: the cognitive corpus stylistic approach is applied to identify language patterns and stylistic features in the selected data. The multilevel method targets the language patterns that reflect the culture of the Middle East in the book, as well as the stylistic features of cultural constructions and examine how they are linguistically and cognitively encoded in the text, so that the gap found in the literature can be filled. Results: The findings of this study show that the frequent use of particular language patterns related to religion, food, and traditions in the text reflects the culture to global readers. Conclusion: The cognitive corpus stylistic approach is employed to analyze the data and achieve the intended objectives. Corpus stylistics plays an effective role in supporting and providing insights that strengthen the cognitive stylistic analysis. AntConc software helps to find textual evidence to support the analysis. Consequently, integrating bottom-up (quantitative analysis utilizing corpus tools) and top-down (qualitative analysis) methodologies yields a thorough and nuanced examination of the data in question.

A Semiotic Study of Reduplicative Words in Selected American Slang Expressions
...Show More Authors

This study explores the semiotic aspects of American slang, specifically focusing on the phenomenon of reduplicative expressions in informal speech. Despite the extensive research on American slang, limited attention has been given to the cultural and mythical meanings embedded within reduplicative expressions. To address this gap, the study investigates how these expressions convey denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings within casual American discourse. The objectives of the study include: 1. To what extent does Barthes’ semiotic model hold potential for application in this study? 2. How are reduplicative slang expressions widely used in everyday American life? 3. One of the prominent goals of Metrical Phonology Theory is providing stress of poetry on the syllable-, the foot-, and the phonological word- levels. Analysing poetry is one of the most prominent and controversial issues for the involved number and types of syllables, feet, and meters are stable in poetry compared to other literary texts. The prosodic seeds of the theory have been planted by Firth (1948) in English, while in Arabic يديهارفلا in the second half of the eighth century (A.D.) has done so. Investigating the metrical structure of poetry has been conducted in various languages, whereas scrutinising the metrical structure of English and Arabic poetry has received little attention. This paper presents the intricate issues and strategies related to the translation of children's books, and it particularly focuses on the comparative analysis of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" by Beatrix Potter and "Le Petit Prince" (The Little Prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The study finds that the typical problems in translation are, idiomatic expressions, cultural reference, and the voice preservation, along side-sheet-specific challenges which each of the text faces. The translator of Potter's work should have skills of transposing all culturally oriented peculiarities of the UK land to the international audience to keep it accessible. On the contrary, "Le Petit Prince" translation will be the process of capturing the abstra

Decolonizing Trauma and Cocooning Identity: A Study in Selected Postcolonial Plays
...Show More Authors

The concept of decolonization of trauma has intrigued researchers for years due to its prolonged effect on personal and cultural levels. The process of intellectual decolonization involves defensive survival mechanisms, such as cultural rituals using traditional practices, nostalgic dialogues that idealize memories and recollections, and conversations about identity to navigate postcolonial trauma displacement. Symbolic connections evoke strong emotional responses, bridging the gap between the characters‘ physical dislocation and their imaginary homeland. Cocooning identity represents a space where a multidimensional self emerges—one that holds the victim of trauma, the survivor who endures, and the narrator, who constructs an idealized
