The sensor is based on ion association of MFA with Dodecaphospho molybdic acid (PMA) and Dodeca–Tungstophosphoric acid(PTA) as ion pairs. The expression of polysaccharide encoding locus (pelA gene) by P. aeruginosa is essential for this ability.
