The conjunctive ''and'' and its Arabic counterpart ''و'' are discourse markers that express certain meanings and presuppose the presence of other elements in discourse. They are indispensable aids to both the text writers and readers. The present study aims to show that such cohesive ties help the writer to organize his main argument and communicate his ideas vividly and smoothly. They also serve as explicit signals that help readers unfold text and follow its threads as realized in the progression of context. The researcher has utilized the Quirk Model of Semantic Implication for data analysis. A total of 42 (22 for English and 20 for Arabic) political texts selected from different elite newspapers in both Arabic and English for the analysis. The results of data analysis revealed that ''and'' and و [wa ] are necessary discourse markers that provide surface clues for the interpretation of text and the absence of such clues may cause ambiguity and result in incoherentdiscourse. In conclusion it was confirmed that the approach of semantic implications of ''and '' adopted by Quirk, et, al. suits the characteristics of Arabic text.
The current study was designed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of GKB in the rat model of granulomatous inflammation. Thirty rats were distributed into five groups: The first group served as negative control group that received distilled water (DW) only without inducting inflammation, positive control group; treated with DW with the induction of inflammation and they were assigned to cotton pellet-induced granuloma, ginkgo biloba (GKB) treated group (200mg/kg/day), dexamethasone-treated group (1mg/kg), and Prednisolone treated group (5mg/kg). Show MorePresupposition is the background belief that is known by both the speaker and the addressee, it is tied to particular words and aspects of the surface structure that act as linguistic triggers. The present study aims at investigating whether Iraqi fourth -year university students are able to recognize the English presuppositions through the meaning of these linguistic triggers .To fulfil the basic requirements of the study, the researcher has conducted a test . The results of the study have validated the hypothesis of the work and it is found that the linguistic triggers are important tools in recognizing presuppositions.
Summary: The study focused on the role of the educational counselor in schools, as an integral part of the educational system that faces multiple challenges and difficulties. In this context, the counselor’s role becomes crucial in attempting to reduce or eliminate such difficulties, in addition to guiding students in an appropriate manner.
