Radiation shielding properties of Cd-Bi-Pb-Zn-borate glasses: influence of Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> activation

Abstract<p>We report the detail characterizations and <italic>γ</italic>-radiation protecting characteristics of some new types of cadmium (Cd)-bismuth (Bi)-lead (Pb)-zinc (Zn)-borate glasses of the form (70-x)B<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-10ZnO-10PbO-10CdO-xBi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> (with x = 0 to 20 mol%) synthesized via melt-quenching process. The influence of various Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> contents on the <italic>γ</italic>-radiation shielding traits of the obtained glass samples was evaluated by exposing them at different <italic>γ</italic>-ray energies (0.356, 0.662, 1.173, and 1.33 MeV) which were recorded by the NaI detector. XRD analyses of the as-quenched specimens showed their glassy phase. A comparison between theoretically computed (Phy-X and XCOM software) and experimentally measured various shielding parameters of the glass samples were performed. Irrespective of the Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> contents, the values of the mass attenuation coefficient, effective atomic number and effective electron density of the prepared glass samples were reduced with the increase of <italic>γ</italic>-ray energies. Furthermore, the theoretically calculated values of all the shielding parameters were agreed well with the measured ones. Regardless of the <italic>γ</italic>-ray energy exposures, the shielding capacity of the studied glasses was improved with the increase of Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> doping contents. The proposed glass compositions were asserted to be useful for the <italic>γ</italic>-ray absorber applications.</p>

The influence of CdCl2 layer and annealing process on the structural and electrical properties of CdTe films

A polycrystalline CdTefilms have been prepared by thermal evaporation technique on glass substrate at room temperature. The films thickness was about700±50 nm. Some of these films were annealed at 573 K for different duration times (60, 120 and 180 minutes), and other CdTe films followed by a layer of CdCl2 which has been deposited on them, and then the prepared CdTe films with CdCl2 layer have been annealed for the same conditions. A new ligand [N- (1,5- dimethyl -3- oxo- 2 – phenyl - 2 ,3 – dihydro -1H- pyrazol -4- ylcarbamothioyl) acetamide] (AAD) was synthesized by reaction of acetyl isothiocyanate with 4-aminoantipyrine, The ligand was characterized by micro elemental analysis C.H.N.S., FT-IR ,UV-Vis and 1H-13CNMR spectra, some transition metals complex of this ligand were prepared and characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis spectra, conductivity measurements, magnetic susceptibility and atomic absorption. From the obtained results the molecular formula of all prepared complexes were [M(AAD)2(H2O)2]Cl2 (M+2 = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Hg),the proposed geometrical structure for all complexes were octahedral.

The measurements of neutron Fermi Age for selected Nuclear Reactor shielding materials using the Indium foil technique

The Neutron Fermi Age, t, and the neutron slowing down density,   q (r, t) , have been measured for some materials such as Graphite and Iron by using gamma spectrometry system UCS-30 with NaI (Tl) detector. This technique was applied for Graphite and Iron materials by using Indium foils covered by Cadmium and the measurements done at the Indium resonance of 1.46 eV. These materials are exposed to a plane 241Am/Be neutron source with recent activity 38 mCi. The measurements of the Fermi Age were found to be t = 297 ± 21 cm2 for Graphite, t = 400 ± 28 cm2 for Iron. Neutron slowing down density was also calculated depending on the recent experimental t value and distance.

Study of annealing effect on some Optical Properties of CuIn(SexTe1-x)2 Thin Films

The optical properties for the components CuIn(SexTe1-x)2 thin films with both values of selenium content (x) [0.4 and 0.6] are studied. The films have been prepared by the vacuum thermal evaporation method with thickness of (250±5nm) on glass substrates. From the transmittance and absorbance spectra within the range of wavelength (400-900)nm, we determined the forbidden optical energy gap (Egopt) and the constant (B). From the studyingthe relation between absorption coefficient (α) photon energy, we determined the tails width inside the energy gap.
