Nada A. S. Al Alwan, M.D., Ph.D., is currently an Emeritus Professor, at Baghdad University Medical College. She served as the Health Advisor to the Presidency of the Iraqi Republic (from 2019 to 2022), a Visiting Professor at Oxford University (2022-2024), the Founding Director of the Iraqi National Cancer Research Center (from 2012 to 2019), and a Consultant Professor of Pathology at Baghdad University (since 2001).
Nada Alwan organized the National Cancer Research Program and led the Medical Committee of the Iraqi Scientific Research Council , Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research (from 2010 to 2019). She was appointed as a National Coordinator of the Capacity Building Project for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment in Iraq, which was supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (2016-2019).
As a member of the Iraqi Cancer Board, Prof. Alwan was the Executive Director of the National Breast Cancer Early Detection Program and the Manager of its Referral Training Center in the Medical City Teaching Hospital, Ministry of Health (from 2001 to 2017).
Internationally, Nada Alwan has been a Fellow of the International Union against Cancer since 1996 and acted as a Temporary Advisor to the Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO/EMRO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on promoting cancer control strategies in developing countries. She developed an information system data base for breast cancer patients under supervision of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, Lyon) which was utilized by WHO as a model for following up breast cancer patients in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
Prof. Nada Alwan published 115 peer-reviewed articles on cancer control in low- and middle-income countries; focusing on breast cancer as the most predominant malignancy among women worldwide.
