إن مصطلح الأسرار لم يكن شائعًا عند علماء النحو القدامى إلا نادرًا  ، واستعملوا مصطلحات أخرى دالة على الأسرار، نحو: (العلل، العلة، التعليل، السبب، السنن، العجائب، الدقائق، الغرائب، الإعجاز)، وكثيرًا ما يذكر علماء النحو الألفاظ الآتية: (علة ذلك، سبب ذلك، تعليل ذلك). وشاع مصطلح الأسرار عند المعاصرين، فكانوا يقصدون به الأسرار، وأحيانًا يقصدون العلل.
