VOLTAGE STABILITY ENHANCEMENT AND LOSS REDUCTION VIA OPTIMUM LOCATION OF A SERIES CAPACITOR
...Show More Authors

Series compensation is frequently found on long transmission lines used to improve voltage stability. Due to the long transmission lines, voltage begins to decay as the line moves further from the source. Series compensation devices placed strategically on the line to increase the voltage profile of the line to levels near 1.0 p.u.. This paper presents a novel optimum location and optimum percentage compensation value of a series capacitor as a compensation method to enhance the voltage stability and loss reduction. The proposed method is applied to a 11-bus power system. The load flow analysis using Newton-Raphson approach for the 11-bus test system was designed and tested using MATLAB 7 programming language.

STATIC ANALYSIS OF THIN-WALLED CURVED BEAM ELEMENT INCLUDING WARPING EFFECTS
...Show More Authors

A new mathematical model for three-dimensional thin-walled curved beam element of closed
section with seven degree-of-freedom per node is derived using the finite element procedure. The
seventh degree-of-freedom is to account for warning restraint effects in thin-walled closed sections.
These effects may become significant and should be fully considered in such sections for which
warping deformations are relatively large. This model considers the coupled action due to the
curved geometry of the element using its exact static behavior in the derivation of the displacement
field. Also, the modei considers the non-uniform torsional behavior of closed thin-walled sections

SOLVING MULTIPLE-CONTAINER PACKING PROBLEMS USING PSEUDO-MEIOSIS GENETIC ALGORITHM
...Show More Authors

Knapsack problems are a class of common but difficult (NP-complete or NP -hard) problems. Since, it is believed that no knapsack problem algorithm can be constructed whose computation time optimality increases as any polynomial function of the problem size. There is a variety of knapsack-type problems in which a set of entities, together with their values (profits) and sizes, is given, and it is desired to select one or more disjoint subsets so that the total of the sizes in each subset does not exceed given bounds and the total of the selected values is maximized. Diploid representation and dominance operator are advanced operators that attempt to improve upon the power of traditional genetic algorithms. Pseudo Meiosis Genetic Algorithm

ELASTIC STABILITY OF FRAMES HAVING CONCAVE TAPERED STRUTS
...Show More Authors

The aesthetic and architectural shapes of the beam-column elements may enhance the elements strength depending on the maximum and minimum bending moments effect. Therefore, the stability value of the non-linear taper member in concave configuration may be more efficient than linear taper or prismatic members. The modified stability functions will be obtained from the solution of the basic differential equation, where this basic differential equation depends on the non-linearity factor of the beam-column shape and the shape factor of the cross-sectional area. These two factors, multiplied by others, produce the modified shape factor, which affects the results of the basic differential equation solutions.

Development of Regression Models for Predicting Pavement Condition Index from the International Roughness Index
...Show More Authors

Flexible pavements are considered an essential element of transportation infrastructure. So, evaluations of flexible pavement performance are necessary for the proper management of transportation infrastructure. Pavement condition index (PCI) and international roughness index (IRI) are common indices applied to evaluate pavement surface conditions. However, the pavement condition surveys to calculate PCI are costly and time-consuming as compared to IRI. This article focuses on developing regression models that predict PCI from IRI. Eighty-three flexible pavement sections, with section length equal to 250 m, were selected in Al-Diwaniyah, Iraq, to develop PCI-IRI relationships. In terms of the quantity and severity of eac

This research presents a method of using MATLAB in analyzing a nonhomogeneous soil (Gibson-type) by
estimating the displacements and stresses under the strip footing during applied incremental loading
sequences. This paper presents a two-dimensional finite element method. In this method, the soil is divided into a number of triangle elements. A model soil (Gibson-type) with linearly increasing modulus of elasticity with depth is presented. The influences of modulus of elasticity, incremental loading, width of footing, and depth of footing are considered in this paper. The results are compared with authors' conclusions of previous studies.
