Vitamin D deficiency/ insufficiency and some of its related factors in a sample of Iraqi pregnant women and their neonates at Al-Elwiya Maternity Teaching Hospital during 2019
...Show More Authors

In their cross-sectional study, Al-Rubaye et al studied the extent of vitamin D (VD) deficiency/ insufficiency, factors affecting its degree, and the adverse outcomes of the altered VD status among a group of mothers and their neonates from Baghdad, Iraq. They found that 96.6% of the mothers had VD deficiency/ insufficiency compared to 86.4% in their neonates. Maternal VD levels and neonatal weights were significantly correlated with neonatal VD levels. We believe that the study results need to be revised. This is based  two points listed in this letter to editor

Background: Joubert syndrome (JS) is a very rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by agenesis of cerebellar vermis, abnormal eye movements, respiratory irregularities, and delayed generalized motor development. Retinal dystrophy and cystic kidneys may also be associated with this clinical syndrome. The importance of recognizing JS is related to the outcome and its potential complications. This syndrome is difficult to diagnose clinically because of its variable phenotype. Its neuroimaging hallmarks include the characteristic molar tooth sign and bat wing-shaped fourth ventricle

The Correlation of Serum Periostin Level with Disease Severity in Patients with Covid -19
...Show More Authors

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by the new respiratory virus SARS-CoV2. It has a tropism in the lung tissues where excess target receptors exist. Periostin plays a role in subepithelial fibrosis associated with bronchial asthma. Since the Coronavirus's target is the human respiratory system, Periostin has been recently described as a valuable new biomarker in the diagnosis and evaluation of disease in patients with COVID-19 lung involvement.

Objectives: To assess the level of Periostin in the serum of COVID-19 patients and to correlate its role in disease severity and prognosis.

To reach the objective, the study traced a number of journal databases, including Embase, Pub med, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus. The study considered a number of factors, especially studies that investigated antioxidants, physical activity, and superoxide dismutase. In addition, the studies must have been published within the last five

Brucellosis, a significant zoonotic infection, is characterized by protean manifestations that can make timely diagnosis difficult. This case report details a severe and atypical presentation of brucellosis in a 41-year-old male from a rural area in Kirkuk, Iraq, a region where the disease is endemic. The patient presented with a one-month history of debilitating upper back pain, fever, and constitutional symptoms. His condition was complicated by the formation of large para-vertebral and epidural abscesses in the cervical spine. For which he was treated with empirical antibiotics, but his symptoms persisted, and he subsequently developed acute brucellar orchitis. This condition can lead to complications such as intussusception, with colocolic intussusception being particularly rare. We present the case of a 30-year-old female who exhibited acute on chronic abdominal pain and progressive distension, along with digital and perioral hyperpigmentation. Unfortunately, her diagnosis of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome was delayed until she developed intestinal obstruction. The Role of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in Different Psychiatric Disorders and Neurodegenerative Diseases
...Show More Authors

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a widely studied neurotrophins found throughout the mammalian central nervous system. These neurotrophins regulate numerous aspects of neuronal and oligodendroglia development and function, including axonal growth, synaptic plasticity, differentiation, proliferation, survival, and apoptosis. Brain-derived neurotrophic factors have a significant impact on neurodegenerative disorders, synaptic plasticity, and the formation and maintenance of a normal brain circuit. Precise regulation of Brain-derived neurotrophic factor concentrations, including their controlled release at the transcriptional and translational levels, is essential for the correct functioning of the central nervous system.
