Gazeta.ru Dialogues: Analyzing Social News through a Linguistic Prism
...Show More Authors

This study employs a critical discourse analysis approach to investigate the linguistic and discursive mechanisms employed by the prominent Russian online news platform Gazeta.ru in its coverage of social news. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework integrating critical discourse analysis (CDA), media discourse analysis, and sociolinguistic perspectives, the research examines how language is used to construct and disseminate societal narratives. The analysis focuses on a dataset of Gazeta.ru articles published in March 2024, encompassing topics such as health, travel, and consumer affairs. Through a multi-level analytical approach, the study explores macro-level discursive strategies and microlevel linguistic choices, unveiling the intricate interplay between language, power, and ideology in shaping public perceptions and reinforcing sociocultural norms. Findings reveal the pivotal role of Gazeta.ru in framing narratives, positioning authoritative voices, and employing linguistic devices that contribute to the reproduction and naturalization of specific belief systems and power structures. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship among language, media discourse, and societal narratives, highlighting the need for critical media literacy and a nuanced understanding of communication and societal dynamics.

The structure of the interrogation process in cross-examinations is said to be diverse and complex in terms of question-response typology. It also aims to measure the amount of cooperativity in witnesses' responses. Accordingly, three transcripts of cross-examination have been analyzed, using a pragmatically-oriented approach. The approach draws on Stenstorm (1984) and Arch
