Water Pollution and Environmental Sustainability Interlinkages, Risks, and Sustainable Solutions
...Show More Authors

Water pollution is a severe worldwide issue threatening ecosystem quality, human health, and the sustainability of the environment in the long term. Some of the major contaminants affecting freshwater bodies are industrial effluents, agricultural effluents, domestic effluents and novel contaminants like pharmaceuticals and micro plastics among others. The effects of these stressors on the quality of water, biodiversity, ecosystem services and quality-added water scarcity. Climate change, population increase, and socioeconomic differences in access to clean water further increase the impact of water pollution on environmental sustainability. Sustainable solutions involve a combined and preventative solution, such as nature-based solutions, high- technology wastewater treatment systems, clean production, and efficient environmental governance. Water quality indices, heavy-metal pollution indices, biological indicators, and remote sensing are the environmental indicators and monitoring tools that are essential to evaluate the dynamics of pollution and make policy decisions. Nevertheless, gaps in research have remained, especially on the emergent contaminants and the lack of capacity to monitor in the developing areas. This review identifies the major sources of pollution, its effects and sustainable solutions to help in the protection of water resources in the long term.

Assessment of heavy metal soil pollution in areas surrounding Baghdad and the associated environmental risks
...Show More Authors

The study included calculating levels of lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, nickel, chromium, and iron in the Baghdad Belt region using geochemical indicators, including the Integrated Pollution Index (IPI) and the Risk Index (RI). Data variations were observed between the agricultural and industrial areas studied, reflecting differences in heavy metal levels. The highest concentrations of lead (89 mg/kg), cadmium (1.9 mg/kg), zinc (133 mg/kg), copper (77 mg/kg), nickel (91 mg/kg), chromium (100 mg/kg), and iron (25,000 mg/kg) were recorded in Abu Ghraib. Pollution indices showed moderate to severe levels, ranging from 1.23 in Al-Tarmiya to a maximum of 2.28 in Abu Ghraib.

THE ROLE OF BACTERIA IN REDUCING THE IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION: BETWEEN RISKS AND BENEFITS / A REVIEW ARTICLE
...Show More Authors

The objective of this article is to study the impact of environmental pollution on air, water, and soil quality with a focus on the role of environmental bacteria in bioremediation of pollutants. The research also addresses the ability of some strains of bacteria to remove heavy metals and petroleum hydrocarbons and degrade toxic substances, resulting in improved environmental quality. Outcomes: Empirical studies reveal that environmental pollution leads to significant health and environmental problems, such as a rise in respiratory disease as a result of air pollution, water pollution that affects aquatic life, and soil pollution that decreases crop output. Other bacterial strains such as Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Streptomyces have also b

The role of environmental taxation and environmental incentives to reduce environmental pollution manifestations in the urban environment
...Show More Authors

The aim of studying the role of environmental taxation is to reduce or mitigate the problem of environmental pollution and obtain a clean environment. And the importance of research lies in the fact that environmental taxation is one of the basic tools to achieve environmental balance. As it is considered one of the sustainable economic tools that focuses on the concept of environmental taxes and fees. Therefore, the incentives stimulated institutions to invest in clean energy and use environmentally friendly machines. Through it, the rules of the competition are updated in favor of organizations that respect the environment so that they can obtain a green competitive advantage. And that the mai

The Role of Green Spaces, Technological Innovation, and Environmental Taxes on Environmental Sustainability in Iraq
...Show More Authors

Abstract: In recent times, global attention has increasingly focused on the critical issue of environmental sustainability, owing to escalating environmental degradation exacerbated by the utilization of green spaces and technological innovation. This phenomenon necessitates thorough examination, prompting the present study to scrutinize the impact of various factors, namely green spaces, technological innovation, environmental taxes, renewable energy consumption (REC), inflation, and economic growth (EG), on environmental sustainability within the context of Iraq. Secondary data extracted from the World Development Indicators (WDI) spanning the period from 1991 to 2022 served as the foundation for this investigation. Methodologically, the

The role of environmental governance in maintaining environmental systems and achieving urban sustainability
...Show More Authors

The solution to the problems and challenges of the twenty-first century requires the absorption of many transformations, such as demographic change, poverty reduction, the expansion of safe and clean energy without affecting the environment, as well as reducing health risks and other transitions. It also requires greater cooperation than is possible in the current global system, because both of these constraints and challenges, even if addressed locally or nationally, are because of the potential for their transnational impact, that is, their impact on the lives of people at the global level, Which is necessary to be fully addressed unless it is guided by a comprehensive global vision. This is what environmental governance provides in te

Water Crisis and Its Relation to Achieving Sustainable Agricultural Development in Iraq (The Real Causes and Proposed Solutions)
...Show More Authors

The conservation of natural resources such as water is one of the areas that sustainable agriculture seeks to preserve, rationalize its use and protect it from pollution, because water is a specific factor for agriculture. Despite Iraq's possession of two international rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates, which pour into the Shatt Al-Arab, it suffers from water shortages in recent times, As a result of several reasons combined, including water policies initiated by the riparian countries to reduce the quantities of water coming from the two rivers to Iraq, led by neighbor Turkey through the construction of dams and reservoirs and the establishment of irrigation projects, as well as climate changes from rising temperatures and lo

The Ripple Effect of Plastic Pollution: Environmental and Public Health Perspectives: A review
...Show More Authors

Abstract: Plastic pollution is a major issue of the current century. This waste is found in seas, freshwater, lakes, rivers, coastal areas, and soil. In this article, this article discusses the various sources of plastic pollution, including the manufacturing process of plastics and the addition of materials to improve their properties, as well as the use of single-use plastics that are not recyclable, in addition to burning and illegal waste disposal in the open. The impact on public health is through human exposure to toxins from plastics in the environment directly through inhaling dust and fumes, consuming contaminated food and drink, and skin contact. Indirectly, when marine creatures consume microplastics, they will find their way
