Uses and Usages of Passive Voice in English
...Show More Authors

As it is known, passive voice is defined differently from two different aspects: the syntactic and the stylistics aspect. As far as the syntactic aspect is concerned, Leech and Jan (1994:209) say that passive voice is a grammatical process which changes the positions of the elements in the sentence. As for the semantic aspect, Biber et.al (1999:154) state that passive voice involves much more than an order variation with SVA. It involves a structural organization of the clause and it can be described as a systematic means of choosing a participant other than the agent as the starting point of the message without departing from the normal subject initial word order. Thus, with accordance with these two different meanings, one can conclude that the benefits of passive voice varied, consequently .In other words, the uses of passive voice are not random. Besides, passive voice, as a process does not represent a mere recast of the original active sentence to a passive one whether agentive or agentless. Instead, there are rules for its usages and a lot of uses for its linguistic utilization. Accordingly, the following paper will study and consider the different uses and usages of passive voice .Furthermore, it will go through the differences between the active and passive construction, and finally, it will give a hint to the main differences between active and passive constructions in both Arabic and English for the purpose of gaining better understanding and clarification of the passive voice in English.

Multiple Voice narrative

With the shift of narration and the revolution against the traditional methods which were dominated by the authorial intrusion and the single narrative voice, there appeared new forms that go along with the change in methods of narration. Form becomes the representation which equips us to understand more fully aspects of existence outside of art. Form is the objectifying of idea, and its excellence depends upon its appropriateness to the idea.1 One of the most important approaches to writing fiction is the power of point of view.

In the strategy of 'point of view' lies the secret of art and, as Norman Friedman indicates, it provides a method for distinguishing the possible degrees of authorial extinction in the narrati

The speaker identification is one of the fundamental problems in speech processing and voice modeling. The speaker identification applications include authentication in critical security systems and the accuracy of the selection. Large-scale voice recognition applications are a major challenge. Quick search in the speaker database requires fast, modern techniques and relies on artificial intelligence to achieve the desired results from the system. Many efforts are made to achieve this through the establishment of variable-based systems and the development of new methodologies for speaker identification. Speaker identification is the process of recognizing who is speaking using the characteristics extracted from the speech's waves like pi

VOICE ACTIVATION VISUALIZATION FOR ECHOCARDIOGRAPH AND 3D ANGIOGRAPHIC IMAGES IN SURGERY
...Show More Authors

In some cases, surgeons need to navigate through the computer system for reconfirmation patients’ details and unfortunately surgeons unable to manage both computer system and operation at the same time. In this paper we propose a solution for this problem especially designed for heart surgeon, by introducing voice activation system with 3D visualization of Angiographic images, 2D visualization of Echocardiography processed video and selected patient’s details. In this study, the processing, approximation of the 3D angiography and the visualization of the 2D echocardiography video with voice recognition control are the most challenging work. The work involve with predicting 3D coronary three from 2D angiography image and also image enhan

The alluvial fan of Mandali located between latitude 30˚45’00” N longitude 45˚30’00” E in east of Diyala Governorate, Iraq. Thirty-five wells were identified in the study area with average depth of 84 m and estimated area of 21550 ha. A three-dimensional conceptual model was prepared by using GMS program. From wells cross sections, four geological layers have been identified. The hydraulic conductivity of these layers was calculated for steady state condition, where the water levels for nine wells distributed over the study area were observed at same time. Afterward, PEST facility in the GMS was used to estimate the aquifer hydraulic characteristics. Other characteristics such as storage coefficient and specific yield have

Behavior of passive single pipe pile in sandy soil

Abstract<p>This research focuses on studying the effects of soil movement on the behavior of an existing pile driven in sandy soil. A physical model has been manufactured to investigate the effect of construction of an embankment adjacent to free head single pile driven in sand of dry unit weight of 13.5 kN/m3. The model pile of diameter (D) of 10 mm are tested under two conditions of loading: loaded axially and without load. The model piles are instrumented with strain gauges along the embedded length to measure strains resulting from the soil movement. The embankment loads are applied at distances of 2.5, 5, and 10D from the edge of the pile. The results obtained from the </p> ... Show More
